Where these numbers come from

Mazatlan uses pesos, so read the table for both currencies. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. Each conversion uses the same static rate, 18.1259 pesos per US dollar on September 30, 2026, taken from ECB-based reference data. Real rates move daily, which makes the dollar figures estimates.

Ships berth at the commercial terminal inside an active cargo harbor, so the first step is a free tram from the gangway to the terminal exit. From there, two guides put the Centro Historico at roughly 1 to 1.5 km, a 15 to 20 minute walk along the painted Blue Line route. That walk costs nothing and covers the old town, cathedral and market.

Pulmonias, the open-air carts, are the local taxi. Rides are negotiated, not metered, so settle the price before boarding. A local guide lists 80 to 100 pesos inside the Golden Zone and 150 to 200 pesos from the Golden Zone to Olas Altas. Another guide lists 50 to 100 pesos to Centro, which is about $2.76 to $5.52, and 150 to 250 pesos to the Golden Zone. The Golden Zone is about 4 miles north of the port.

The Sabalo-Centro bus is the cheapest option, at 10 to 15 pesos per ride ($0.55 to $0.83). Stone Island is a short water-taxi hop, about 30 pesos round trip. For paid attractions, one guide lists the Observatorio 1873 at about US$28, and cruise-line city tours at about US$49. Full-day adventure packages reach US$120 and up.

Worked example, two adults. Walk to the old town at $0, pulmonia to the Golden Zone at 250 pesos ($13.79) each way for the two of them, so 500 pesos or about $27.58 round trip. Add the Observatorio at $28 each = $56. The day comes to about $84. A cruise-line walking tour at $49 each would be $98 and needs no taxi.

Mazatlan is a good walkable stop compared with Puerto Vallarta, where the terminal is far from town, or Ensenada. Enter your plan in the cruise excursion budget calculator. Confirm pulmonia fares with the driver each time, because guides differ.
