Where these numbers come from

LAX runs on a pay-by-the-time system, then caps at a daily maximum. In the Central Terminal Area structures, general parking costs $9 for the first hour ($11 in P3 and P4) and $7 for each 30 minutes afterward, up to $60 a day. Premium parking in P1, P3 and P7 costs $11 for the first hour, $9 per 30 minutes, and $70 a day. Every type gives the first 10 minutes free. Valet is $75 a day with a 24-hour minimum.

Economy parking sits at 6100 W. 94th Street and is listed at $8 for the first hour, $7 per 30 minutes, and a $35 daily max. Budget parking at 5455 W. 111th Street is $5 an hour or fraction with a $20 cap. Both use a complimentary shuttle to the terminals around the clock, and the airport lists the Budget shuttle at every 20 to 25 minutes. The official shop page estimates Economy at about 15 minutes to the terminal.

Run a week through the caps. General parking is 7 x $60 = $420, Premium is 7 x $70 = $490, and Valet is 7 x $75 = $525. Economy is 7 x $35 = $245 and Budget is 7 x $20 = $140. The difference between General and Budget over a week is $280, enough for a pair of one-way tickets in many cases. Two weeks of Budget is $280 against $840 for General.

Pre-booking changes the math. The airport's reservation site lists starting prices of $24 a day for General, $26 for Premium, $14 for Economy, and $20 for Valet. These are starting prices, and they vary by date and availability. If you actually get the Economy starting price, a seven-day trip costs 7 x $14 = $98, which is $147 less than paying the $245 cap at drive-up. Treat the figure as a best case.

The Van Nuys FlyAway lot is a different idea. It charges $1 an hour, with a daily maximum of $6 on one official page and $5 on another. The FlyAway bus is $9.75 according to the reservations page. At $6 a day and two bus fares of $9.75, a seven-day trip is 7 x $6 + 2 x $9.75 = $61.50. The ride takes more than an hour, so weigh time against savings. The airport parking on-site vs off-site calculator can test your own case.

A final note on timing: the Central Terminal Area structures fill during holiday weeks, and the airport tells you to use the official booking site for availability. For other big-city hubs see Chicago O'Hare and Las Vegas. The airport page shows no dated change notice.
