Where these numbers come from

Detroit Metro splits its parking into short-term and long-term, and the two price lists differ. Long-term parking is available in three places: the McNamara garage, the Big Blue Deck and the Green Lots. McNamara starts at $4 for 30 minutes and is capped at $32 per 24 hours. Big Blue Deck begins with the same increments and is capped at $23. The Green Lot is a flat $20 for a 24-hour period, and it is the only one of the three that accepts only cards.

After the first 24 hours the daily amount becomes a flat rate: $32 at McNamara, $23 at Big Blue and $20 at Green. A week is therefore 7 x $32 = $224, 7 x $23 = $161 or 7 x $20 = $140 before fees. Every card payment carries a 2.65% processing fee, so the Green Lot week is $140 x 1.0265 = $143.71. Big Blue comes to $165.27 and McNamara to $229.94. Two weeks at the Green Lot is $287.42, against $459.87 at McNamara, a difference of $172.45.

Short-term parking is priced for quick visits. McNamara short-term starts at $4 for 30 minutes or less and caps at $44 a day; the Big Blue Deck short-term cap is $43. Beyond the first 24 hours the flat charge is $44 or $43 per day. Parking for a week in a short-term space would be 7 x $44 = $308 at McNamara, which is $84 more than the McNamara long-term week. The lesson is to pick the long-term rate whenever the stay is overnight.

Practical details matter. Free shuttles run between the on-airport lots and the Ground Transportation Center at both terminals, so the Green Lot is a real on-airport option, not a far-away lot. Vehicles taller than 7 feet can park in the Green Lots, which fits vans and raised trucks. The airport offers a 24-hour parking hotline for availability at (800) 642-1978, which is worth calling before a holiday weekend.

If a cheaper private lot tempts you, test it in the airport parking on-site vs off-site calculator. Compare Detroit's three-lot ladder with Houston Bush, where the cheapest flat rate is $10, or with Minneapolis-St. Paul, which caps Value parking at $23 before tax.
