Where these numbers come from

Japan is pricier than Southeast Asia but cheaper than most of Western Europe for rent. Numbeo, updated 29 September 2026, lists a one-bedroom at JPY 92,171 in a city centre and JPY 61,244 outside it, or $587 and $390 at 1 yen = $0.006370 (ECB, 30 September 2026). Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. Its estimate for one person before rent is $839 a month.

Utilities stand out: JPY 24,481 for electricity, heating, cooling, water and garbage plus JPY 5,162 for internet is about $189. A monthly transport pass costs JPY 9,000 ($57). After subtracting those, we split the rest into groceries and dining. One person comes to $1,113 low, $1,433 mid and $1,919 high. A couple sharing one home needs $1,598, $2,098 and $2,904.

Japan has no retirement visa for Americans, so the official path here is the digital nomad visa under Designated Activities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs page requires proof of annual income of JPY 10 million or more (about $63,700 at today's rate). It also requires insurance covering death, injury or illness, with medical compensation of at least JPY 10 million. The stay is 6 months with no extension. JNTO lists the United States among eligible countries.

That limit changes how you budget. Six months at the mid figure is $8,598 for one person, and you must also keep the income evidence on file. Spouses and children may apply under the same category. Because the stay cannot be extended, anyone planning a longer residence needs a different status, such as a work or spouse visa, which this page does not price.

Health cover has two layers. The visa needs private insurance. Residents on stays of three months or more must also join National Health Insurance, and one 2026 guide puts premiums at JPY 2,000 to 5,000 a month in a first year with no local income, about JPY 10,000 to 15,000 at JPY 2 million of income and JPY 22,000 to 30,000 at JPY 4 million. We use JPY 3,500, 12,000 and 30,000, or $22, $76 and $191, and double them for a couple. Whether visa holders enrol is for the ward office to confirm.

Worked example: a remote worker earning $85,000 a year clears the income line at today's rate, and a mid budget of $1,433 a month is $17,196 a year. Frequently asked questions

How much does an American need per month in Japan?

Our estimate is $1,113 (low), $1,433 (mid) and $1,919 (high) for one person. Tokyo-area rent pushes you toward the high end.

What does Japan's digital nomad visa require?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs page asks for proof of annual income of JPY 10 million or more and insurance with at least JPY 10 million of medical compensation. The stay is 6 months with no extension.

Can I retire in Japan on a US pension?

The sources I opened describe no retirement visa for Americans. The digital nomad visa needs earned remote income and lasts 6 months, so a longer stay needs another status.
