Where these numbers come from

Costa Rica costs more than its Central American reputation suggests. Numbeo, updated 28 September 2026, lists a one-bedroom at CRC 387,288 in a city centre and CRC 294,484 outside it, or $849 and $645 at 456.35 colones per dollar, the midpoint of the central bank's 30 September 2026 buy and sell reference rates. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. Numbeo estimates $964 a month for one person before rent.

Our budgets for one person are $1,497 low, $1,839 mid and $2,366 high. A couple sharing one home needs $2,112, $2,650 and $3,534. A monthly transport pass is CRC 30,000 (about $66), and utilities plus internet total CRC 70,067 ($154). Groceries run $410 at the mid level for one person.

Two residence categories carry a clear money test. A 2026 guide reports that the pensionado category needs a lifetime pension of at least $1,000 a month and covers a spouse and minor children. The rentista category needs $2,500 a month of guaranteed income for two years, or a $60,000 bank deposit. The same guide lists a digital nomad stay of 12 months, extendable for another 12. I could not open the immigration agency site, so confirm against the Dirección General de Migración.

The pension line is the easiest route to test. A retiree with $2,200 a month from Social Security clears the $1,000 line twice over, and a mid budget of $1,839 fits inside it. A couple on a $1,400 combined pension could still qualify, but would have little left after $2,650 of mid spending, so they should check the flat rent.

Residents join the public Caja health system. International Living gives a sliding contribution of 5.18% of income up to $1,000, 6.24% from $1,000 to $2,000, 8.02% from $2,000 to $3,000 and 10.69% above that, with deductions for expenses at your interview. We use $52, $94 and $200 for one person, matching incomes of about $1,000, $1,500 and $2,500. Private doctors rarely charge over $60 a visit, per the same source.

Worked example: a single pensioner with $2,000 a month would pay roughly $125 to the Caja, and a mid budget would run about $1,839, nearly the entire pension.
