Where these numbers come from

Halifax is a Canadian stop, so local prices are in Canadian dollars. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. Every conversion here uses one static rate, 1.4188 Canadian dollars per US dollar, the Bank of Canada daily figure for September 29, 2026. Your card will use the rate of the day you pay, so treat the US amounts as estimates.

The port is compact. Two port guides describe main berths at Piers 20 and 22 on the downtown waterfront, with overflow at Pier 23, and one adds a container-terminal berth with a free shuttle when several ships arrive. One guide also mentions a tender berth at Pier 24, while another says no tenders are used, so check your ship's brochure. Either way, the major sights are about a 15-minute walk along a car-free harbour boardwalk.

That makes spending optional. The Halifax Transit bus is listed at CAD 3 (about US$2.11) a ride, and a day pass at CAD 7.50 (about US$5.29). A taxi downtown is reported at CAD 10 to CAD 15, or about US$7 to US$11. The Dartmouth ferry is CAD 3. Because the distances are short, buses help mainly if you head beyond the waterfront.

Halifax Citadel is the paid sight most visitors pick. Parks Canada lists adult admission at CAD 22.00, about US$16, for ages 18 to 64. A guide also notes that museums run CAD 9.40 to CAD 19 per adult, about US$7 to US$13. Peggy's Cove is the day trip: a shared taxi costs CAD 65 to CAD 80 (about US$46 to US$56), and tours are quoted at CAD 50 to CAD 80 per person (US$35 to US$56).

Worked example, two adults. Walk downtown for $0, enter the Citadel at CAD 22 x 2 = CAD 44 (about US$31), then share a Peggy's Cove cab at CAD 80 split two ways for CAD 40 each. The day comes to CAD 124 for the pair, or about US$87. Skipping the cove and adding one museum at CAD 19 each brings it to CAD 82, about US$58. A private car at CAD 75 an hour for the five-hour minimum is CAD 375, about US$264, but carries up to four or six people.
