Where these numbers come from

Bar Harbor has no deep-water pier, so every large ship anchors offshore and passengers ride tenders. A guide lists a 10-minute ride for the nearer anchorage and 15 to 20 minutes for the farther one. The important rule is the return: the final tender leaves 30 to 60 minutes before the ship's departure, so the usable day is shorter than the printed port hours.

Once ashore, the town is close. The Village Green, where the shuttle buses gather, is about 0.2 miles and 5 minutes from the town pier. The Shore Path trailhead is 2 minutes away, and the Abbe Museum is about 8 minutes. Much of Bar Harbor is therefore free to see on foot, and the Island Explorer bus is fare-free for the park routes to Sand Beach and Jordan Pond.

Acadia is where fees show up. The National Park Service lists $35 for a private vehicle and $20 per person for walk-ins and cyclists, both good for 7 days, with children under 16 free. Non-US residents age 16 and older pay an additional $100 per person unless they hold an annual or America the Beautiful pass. The park accepts only cards and mobile payments. Driving up Cadillac Mountain adds a $6 per vehicle reservation from May 20 to October 25.

Worked example, two US adults on the shuttle. The bus is fare-free, but each person entering on foot pays $20 = $40 for the pair. Compare that with a $65 guided trolley tour each = $130. Two e-bikes at $80 for four hours = $160, plus $40 for entry, total $200. A non-US couple would add 2 x $100 = $200 to any of these plans, so the park can cost more than the tour.

Note that Cadillac Mountain needs a vehicle reservation for driving, while foot traffic, bikes and taxis are exempt. The shuttle does not reach the summit, so the summit requires a tour, a taxi or a permitted vehicle. Tender delays also matter more here than on a pier port, because one slow boat can eat an hour.
