Where these numbers come from

New Orleans runs four self-park facilities plus valet, and the price follows how close you are to the terminal. The short-term garage tops out at $26 a day, the long-term garage at $22, the surface lot at $20 and the economy garage at $12. Valet is $36. The current rates took effect March 1, 2024, and they are still the ones on the airport page today.

Do the arithmetic for a five-night trip, counting five 24-hour periods. Economy costs 5 x $12 = $60, the surface lot 5 x $20 = $100, long-term 5 x $22 = $110 and short-term 5 x $26 = $130. Over a week, the economy garage costs $84 while short-term costs $182. On a 14-day trip the gap is 14 x ($26 - $12) = $196.

Economy sounds like a bargain, and with 1,684 spaces it is the roomiest option, but read the fine print. It charges $4 for the first half hour, not free time, and it takes credit cards only. The short-term garage and the surface lot give you 30 free minutes, which suits quick drop-offs. Those two hold just 215 and 80 spaces, so they fill on busy days.

The airport offers online reservations for all facilities. A booked driver must enter within two hours of the reserved time, reservations are non-refundable, and changes need 24 hours' notice. That is stricter than many airports, so book only when your flight times are firm. The airport said at the 2024 change that its rates were still below comparable US airports.

Hourly behavior matters for layovers. In economy, a 2-hour stay costs $4 + 3 x $3 = $13, which already exceeds the $12 cap. So the cap applies from about 1.5 hours. Compare with Houston Hobby, whose ecopark is $10 flat, and St. Louis, where the remote lot is $11. Model a stay in the airport parking on-site vs off-site calculator.

A last scenario shows the order of savings. A weekend of three days in the long-term garage costs 3 x $22 = $66, and the surface lot costs 3 x $20 = $60, so the surface lot is $6 cheaper but has only 80 spaces. The economy garage costs 3 x $12 = $36, which is $30 less than long-term, at the cost of a card-only payment.
