Where these numbers come from

San Juan works as both a port of call and a home port, so travelers often combine a cruise day with a hotel night. The city has two terminals. The San Juan Bay terminal handles up to seven ships and sits next to Old San Juan. The Pan American terminal takes two mega-ships and lies closer to the Convention Center. Tourism officials put both at 15 to 20 minutes from the airport.

Most cruisers who dock at the main pier simply walk. A cruise guide describes roughly eight blocks to the historic center, which covers the forts, plazas and lunch at no transport cost. That guide is from 2021, so treat the walking details as background and check your own pier. The Pan American pier is not walkable to the old city and needs a taxi or the free trolley.

Taxis are the cost to plan for. Tourist taxis run on regulated zone fares. From the Old San Juan piers, a January 2026 guide lists $21 to Condado, Ocean Park, Santurce, Miramar, Isla Verde hotels and the airport, and $17 to the Convention Center. A $1 bag charge, a $1 late-night charge and a $3 airport fee can apply. Older guides quote lower numbers, for example $12 to Condado, so ask for the rate and a receipt first.

Worked example, airport transfer on embarkation day. A couple with three bags takes a taxi from the pier to the airport. The zone fare is $21, bags add $3 and the airport fee adds $3, so the ride is about $27. Reverse it for a disembark morning and the arithmetic is the same. A family of five shares one car, which is why taxis beat rideshares for groups.

Worked example, a day of excursions. Two adults on the Old and New Tour pay $69 each, or $138. The El Yunque waterfall hike at $131 each is $262 and uses most of the day. The bioluminescent bay kayaking combo at $229 each is $458 and runs about 12 hours, which many ships cannot fit. A private walking tour listed from $31 is the cheapest guided option.

Puerto Rico uses US dollars, so there is no conversion and no foreign card fee. Compare San Juan with St. Thomas or Nassau, then enter your own picks in the cruise excursion budget calculator.
