Where these numbers come from

Carnival is the value and party end of the mainstream market. Ships are large, lively and aimed at families and groups. The fare you see in a search is the starting point, and three items follow it: taxes and port charges, the daily gratuity and whatever you buy on board.

A tracker that logged fares over 30 days in early 2026 put the average 7-night inside cabin on Carnival at about $818 per person, or $117 a night. That is a secondary average, not a Carnival quote, and sale fares run lower. The same source puts taxes and port charges at $100 to $300 per person. Use the cruise cost calculator to replace these averages with the fare you actually find.

Here is a worked example for a family of four (two adults, two school-age children) on a 7-night inside sailing. Fare: 4 x $818 = $3,272. Taxes and charges at an assumed $200 each: 4 x $200 = $800. Gratuity at $17 per guest per day: 4 x 7 x $17 = $476. The total is $4,548 before drinks, excursions and Wi-Fi. Switching to a suite would add $2 per guest per day, or $56 for the week. The gratuity calculator runs your own crew size.

Payment timing depends on length. On cruises of six nights or more, there is no cancellation charge until 91 days before sailing apart from nonrefundable cruise charges. The deposit is forfeited from 90 to 56 days out. After that the greater of the deposit or 50% applies from day 55 to 30, 75% from day 29 to 15, and 100% in the last 14 days. Cruises of two to five nights follow the same tiers but begin 15 days later. Final payment is due the evening before the penalty period opens.

Rules worth knowing before you book: infants must be at least six months old at embarkation, or twelve months on transoceanic and remote voyages with two or more consecutive sea days. Guests under 21 need a cabin arrangement that includes an adult 25 or older or a spouse. The gratuity is added automatically to every guest except children under 2, and you can adjust it on board. For dress, the line describes Cruise Casual evenings with collared polos and longer shorts or pants, plus Cruise Elegant nights where suits and cocktail dresses are common.

Who is it best for? Budget-minded families, multigenerational groups and first-timers who want short, lively trips from US ports. Compare with Royal Caribbean and Norwegian if you want bigger ships and pricier onboard extras, and read the Carnival gratuity page and the Carnival drink package page before you price the week. The which cruise line quiz can narrow the field.
