Where these numbers come from

Norwegian built its brand on freestyle cruising: no set dining time, no mandatory formal night and a casual feel. That looseness shapes the costs. The service charge is a flat daily amount, and the promotional Free at Sea package bundles drinks and dining into many fares.

A fare tracker that logged sailings in early 2026 put the average 7-night inside cabin on Norwegian at about $1,181 per person, or $169 per night, plus $100 to $300 in taxes and port charges. Those are secondary averages, not Norwegian quotes. Drop the price you find into the cruise cost calculator.

Here is a worked example for two adults on that 7-night inside sailing. Fare: 2 x $1,181 = $2,362. Taxes at an assumed $200 each: $400. Service charge at $20 per guest per day: 2 x 7 x $20 = $280. The total is $3,042. In a Haven or suite category the charge is $25, so the same trip would add $70. Children 3 and older pay the charge, while younger children do not. The gratuity calculator handles mixed-age groups.

The service charge replaces tips for most crew, and the line says no tipping is required or recommended for general service. Drinks, spa and specialty dining carry a separate 20% charge. Prepaid charges can be added through a travel professional up to 24 hours before sailing, and they are refundable if you cancel. If service falls short, you can ask guest services to adjust the charges.

Cancellation tiers are steeper for premium accommodation. Standard cabins pay 25% from 119 to 91 days, 50% from 90 to 61, 75% from 60 to 31 and 100% in the last 30. Haven and suite bookings pay 25% from 119 to 106, 50% from 105 to 91, 75% from 90 to 61 and 100% at 60 or fewer. The terms also let the line add a fuel surcharge of up to $10 per guest per day if crude tops $65 a barrel. The tiers shown are from the line's Canadian page; check your own booking paperwork.

Who is it best for? Travelers who like flexible dining and casual dress, and who will use the Free at Sea extras. Read the Norwegian gratuity page and the Norwegian drink package page, then compare lines with the which cruise line quiz. On dress, evenings are relaxed, but specialty restaurants ask for smart casual and exclude swimwear, caps and flip-flops.
