Where these numbers come from

Holland America sits in the premium-traditional part of the market. Its ships are mid-sized, the dining room is a main feature, and evenings lean toward a smart-casual dress standard. The fare you see in a search is the starting point. Three extra costs follow it: the daily crew charge, the service charge on anything you buy, and the drink package if you want one.

Official fare pages on the line's site do not list a fixed weekly price, because fares move with the ship, cabin and date. The one published anchor is the last-minute standby program: inside or oceanview cabins from $99 per person per day and verandahs from $129, with taxes and fees stated as included. Over seven nights that is about $693 or $903 per person. Treat those as floors for late bookings, not as typical early-booking prices. Use the cruise cost calculator to model the fare you actually find.

Here is a worked example for two adults on a 7-night standby inside cabin. Fare: 2 x $693 = $1,386. Crew appreciation at $18 each per day: 2 x 7 x $18 = $252. That is $1,638 before drinks. Add the Signature package for both adults: 2 x 7 x $55.95 = $783.30. The total becomes $2,421.30, so the drink package is nearly half of the trip cost. The gratuity calculator and the drink package calculator let you swap in your own numbers.

Rules matter as much as prices. The line asks for smart casual on most evenings and does not allow shorts, beachwear, distressed jeans or tank tops in table-service restaurants. Dressier evenings suggest jackets and dresses, and Grand Voyages lean formal. Guests under 21 must be in a stateroom with an adult 21 or older. Kids programs run by age band: 3 to 6, 7 to 11 and 12 to 17, on most itineraries other than Legendary or Grand Voyages.

Timing rules are firm. Under the contract terms checked for bookings opened from late September 2026, final payment falls 120 days out on most cruises, and the refund drops from 100% to 75%, 50% and then nothing as you cross the 119, 90 and 60-day marks. Older bookings may sit under an earlier schedule, so check your own paperwork. If the trip is close to a cutoff, a cancellation protection plan is sold separately.

Who is it best for? Travelers who value a quieter ship, itinerary depth in Alaska and Europe, and a dining room over waterslides. Families can sail with it, but the kids spaces are smaller than on megaships.
