Where these numbers come from

MSC is the value end of the large-ship market. Its advertised fares are some of the lowest you will see, and its ships carry a European feel, with mixed-language announcements and late dinner seatings. The low fare is the entry price. Service charges, drinks, specialty dining and excursions decide the final bill.

The deals page leads with a cruise from $199 per person plus up to $500 in onboard credit and free sailing for kids on select trips. The page does not name the length, so read it as a floor on a short sailing. The service charge is separate: $17 per person per night in a standard cabin on Caribbean and Alaska bookings made from May 11, 2026, and $23 in the Yacht Club suite area. Children under 2 are exempt. The cruise cost calculator can model the full trip.

A worked example: two adults on a 7-night Caribbean cruise in a standard cabin pay 2 x 7 x $17 = $238 in service charges. If they each buy a Premium Extra package at an assumed $85 per day, that is 2 x 7 x $85 = $1,190, with service charge included. The deposit for a 5 to 14 night cruise is $199 each, or $398, and final payment falls 90 days before sailing. Check the gratuity calculator to compare the charge with other lines.

The cancellation schedule on the US booking terms is blunt. You forfeit the deposit from 51 to 74 days out, pay the greater of 50% or the deposit at 31 to 50 days, 75% at 16 to 30 days, and 100% in the last 15 days. A no-show or early disembarkation is charged in full. Terms change, so confirm the date on your own booking. Travel protection is sold separately.

Two policy points catch first-time MSC guests. Everyone at the same dining table must hold the same drinks package, and under-age guests must buy the Minors package alongside an adult package. The line says it does not recommend tipping individual staff, and the service charge can be removed at Guest Relations if service is poor. A Gala Night is held during cruises, but the pages checked gave no detailed dress rules.

Who is it best for? Budget-minded travelers, multigenerational groups and anyone who will use the lower base fare to fund excursions. Families get strong kids-sail-free offers on select dates. Compare lines with the which cruise line quiz, then read the MSC gratuity page and the MSC drink package page.
