Where these numbers come from

The US version of the MSC line-up is short: Premium Extra for adults, an Alcohol-Free package, and a Minors package for children and teens. Older versions with names like Easy and Easy Plus still appear in guides, but the line's own page now shows the three above. MSC posts no daily prices on the pages checked, so the dollar ranges are from two secondary guides and move with itinerary and booking date.

Premium Extra covers specialty coffee, soft drinks, juices, water, non-alcoholic beer and cocktails, the full beer list, premium spirits, cocktails, premium wines and champagne. The line says it works in bars, buffets, main restaurants, specialty restaurants and private islands. The official page states a limit of up to 15 alcoholic drinks per day. Soft drinks and other non-alcoholic items stay unlimited, per a secondary guide.

A worked example: a couple on a 7-night cruise at an assumed $85 per day pays 2 x 7 x $85 = $1,190. Since the price already includes the service charge, the comparison against an 18% bar charge is fair. At $10 per drink plus 18%, a drink costs $11.80, so each person needs about 7.2 drinks a day to break even. Use the drink package calculator for your own pricing.

The cap per drink is reported at $15 by one guide and $16 by another. Anything above the cap is charged as the difference only. Minibars, specialty coffee shops and souvenir drinkware are excluded. Everyone who dines together, and every adult in the cabin, must hold the same package, which raises the cost for groups where only one person drinks.

Minors must buy the Minors package alongside an adult package, and the age band is 3 to 20 in North America according to secondary guides. That can add about $22 to $25 per child per day. Buying before the cruise is cheaper: one guide reports 30% to 35% off against onboard prices on select packages. Onboard upgrades are sold at full price.

Who benefits? Steady drinkers on longer Caribbean routes, especially families where the price of the Minors package is set against free kids promotions. Light drinkers usually win by paying per drink. Compare with the MSC gratuity page, the MSC overview and the cruise vs all-inclusive calculator.
