Where these numbers come from

This page is a status note, not a parking guide. Charleston's Union Pier Terminal no longer handles cruise ships, so there is no cruise parking rate, shuttle or embarkation process to plan around. If an older article or website still shows Charleston sailings, treat it as out of date and confirm with your cruise line before you book or drive.

The change came in two steps. Carnival ran its homeport at Union Pier for about 14 years, starting in 2010. The last Carnival homeport voyage was the Carnival Sunshine, which left on Monday, January 6, 2025, and returned on Saturday, January 11. The port authority said it wanted to free the terminal for redevelopment. After that, ships could still call for day visits, but none would start or end a trip there.

The second step came in 2026. Local news reported on July 1, 2026 that the Norwegian Jewel was the last cruise ship to dock at Union Pier, with the last ship having docked and departed as of June 30. The city said no future cruise calls are planned. The terminal is now moving toward waterfront redevelopment, and the city has said a public input process on a tourism management plan would roll out in the following months.

What does that mean if you live near Charleston and want a cruise? You will need to drive to another homeport. The closest of the ports covered on this site are Jacksonville and Port Canaveral to the south, and Norfolk to the north. Drive distances and parking rates for each are on their own pages, and none of those figures apply to Charleston.

Budget for a longer drive, a hotel night before sailing, or a flight. A family that once drove a short way to Union Pier now faces a full day in the car or an extra night. Use the cruise parking calculator to compare driving to another port with flying, and the cruise cost calculator for the total.

Plans can change, but a reopening would need a new decision by the city and port authority. Until a source says otherwise, there are no Charleston cruise figures to publish. Check this page's as-of date before relying on it.
