Where these numbers come from

Margaritaville at Sea sells its main package under the name Ultimate Beverage Chill. The from-price depends on the ship. The Islander page lists $49.99 per person per night, and the Paradise page lists $69.99. Both cap the package at 15 drinks a day. The line also sells a cheaper soda package and, on Paradise, a five-beer bundle.

Because these are from-prices, the price you pay can differ by sailing and by when you buy. The Paradise page says pre-purchase can save up to 75%, so buying early is worth a check. The pages checked do not state a per-drink price cap, an automatic service percentage on the package, or whether every adult in a room must buy it. Ask before relying on those points. The drink package calculator accepts custom prices.

Drink menu prices are not published on the ship pages, so the break-even uses an assumed average. Suppose your average drink would cost $9 without the package. At Islander's $49.99 a night, you need 49.99 / 9 = 5.6, so 6 drinks a day. On Paradise at $69.99, you need 7.8, so 8 drinks. With the 15-drink limit, the most you can use is worth 15 x $9 = $135 of value a day at that price.

Here is a worked trip. Two adults sail 4 nights on the Islander. The package costs 2 x 4 x $49.99 = $399.92. If each adult has 5 drinks a day at $9, the drinks alone would cost 2 x 4 x 5 x $9 = $360 without the package, plus the service gratuity the contract applies to bar purchases. The package beats that only if the bar service gratuity exceeds about 11% ($399.92 / $360 = 1.11), so check the percentage first.

For light drinkers, the soda package at $12 per night only pays if you drink a few fountain sodas daily. Beers & Cheers on Paradise works out to $59.99 / 5 = $12 per beer, which is a premium over typical bar prices. The contract says alcohol and specialty drinks are not in the fare, so the cheapest route for one or two drinks is paying as you go.

The Cruise+ bundle is different. It starts at $199 on a 2-night Bahamas trip and adds drinks, soda and Wi-Fi on top of fare, taxes, fees and service charges, but it can only be added when you reserve. Read the gratuity page and the line overview before deciding, or compare totals in the cruise vs all-inclusive calculator.
