Where these numbers come from

Three numbers define a stand-up paddleboard: length, width and volume. Width controls how stable the board feels, length controls speed and tracking, and volume controls how much weight it carries. Glide puts it simply: a 33 inch wide board usually feels steadier than a longer board that is only 30 inches wide. If you are new, pick width first.

Start with your weight. Glide lists under 150 lb at 10' to 10'6" by 32 inches, 150 to 200 lb at 10'6" to 11' by 32 to 34 inches, 200 to 250 lb at 11' to 11'6" by 34 inches, and over 250 lb at 11'6" to 12'6" by 34 to 36 inches. PaddleBoardShop gives very similar bands, with a little narrower width for lighter riders. Where they differ, the gap is one or two inches.

Next, size the volume. GILI Sports multiplies body weight in pounds by 1.1 to 1.4 for beginners and 0.9 to 1.1 for intermediate and advanced paddlers, and notes that many beginners do fine at 1.0 to 1.2. Glide suggests roughly 1.5 liters per pound for beginners. For a 180 lb rider carrying 15 lb of gear, total load is 195 lb. A beginner then targets 214.5 to 273 L, and an experienced paddler 175.5 to 214.5 L.

Then check the weight capacity. PaddleBoardShop adds body weight, gear weight and a 60 lb margin to get a minimum rated capacity: 195 plus 60 is 255 lb. It also says boards perform best at 60% to 70% of rated capacity, and discourages loading past 80% for recreation. Load of 195 lb at 70% implies a capacity near 279 lb, and at 60% near 325 lb. Compare that with the capacity printed on the board.

Your use changes the shape. GILI lists all-around boards at 10'6" to 11'6" by 31 to 35 inches, touring at 11' minimum to 12'6" by 30 to 33 inches, fishing at 10'6" to 12' by 32 to 36 inches, surfing at 9' to 10'6" by 29 to 32 inches, and river boards at 6' to 8'. Narrow touring boards glide faster but ask more of your balance, so weigh speed against comfort.

Standard inflatables are commonly six inches thick, which is the thickness the PaddleBoardShop guide recommends for good buoyancy. Bring a paddle that fits too; the kayak paddle size finder covers that gear, the surfboard size guide covers wave riding, and the camping trip cost calculator helps plan a lakeside weekend.
