Where these numbers come from

A backpacker's daily budget depends mostly on the region. In the February 2026 Brokepackr index, Kosovo is $30 a day, Bulgaria $32, Poland $40, Spain $55, France $65, Switzerland $95 and Scandinavia $80 to $100. The index excludes international flights, visas, insurance and heavy drinking. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates.

Worked example for 14 days in the east: 5 days in Poland at $40, 5 in Hungary at $42 and 4 in Czechia at $45 total $200 plus $210 plus $180, or $590. The same 14 days in France at $65 cost $910. A mixed route of 5 days each in Portugal ($50) and Spain ($55), plus 4 in Italy ($60), adds $250, $275 and $240 for $765. Flights come on top.

Hostels are the largest swing item. Hostelz's 2026 index lists the cheapest dorm beds at $6 in Krakow, $6.50 in Lisbon, $8 in Budapest, $15.50 in Berlin and Copenhagen, and $21.50 in Amsterdam. A second Hostelz article gives averages that run higher: Granada $24, Porto $33, Oslo $60 and Zurich $70. Cheapest listings and averages are different measures, so expect to pay more than the lowest number in peak summer.

Rail passes change the math only on long routes. The second-class adult Global Pass costs $454 for 7 travel days in a month, which is $64.86 per travel day, and $659 for 15 days in two months, or $43.93. The 22 day continuous pass is $698, about $31.73 a day. The page we read listed a 50% promotion through September 30, 2026, so check the price at checkout. Compare a pass against point-to-point tickets for your actual legs.

The Schengen area limits most visitors to 90 days in any 180 day period. The European Commission page says to count back 180 days from each day of your stay and keep the total at 90 or fewer, and it lists 29 Schengen countries. A rail pass covers more countries than Schengen, but the day count still applies. Use the Schengen 90/180 calculator to count your days. This is general information, not legal or insurance advice.

Put it together: 21 days across Poland, Hungary and Czechia at about $42 average is $882, before flights. Add a $698 22 day pass only if you travel most days; a slow route usually costs less with single tickets. For a fuller trip plan see the Europe trip cost calculator, and for the gear side see the glamping cost guide for camping options.
