Where these numbers come from

Santorini is a tender port. Ships anchor over the deep caldera and ferry guests to the Old Port below Fira, and some ships use Athinios Port on the west coast instead. A guide to the island puts the tender at 15 to 45 minutes depending on volume. No pages opened listed a fare for the tender itself, which the cruise line normally runs, so check your daily program.

From the Old Port you climb to town by cable car, donkey or foot. The cable car is listed at EUR 10 each way, $11.36, and EUR 20 return, $22.71, for a 3-minute ride. Queues can run 45 to 60 minutes on heavy days, so early landers do best. The donkey is also about EUR 10 a ride. Walking the 588 steps is free but takes 20 to 30 minutes and is strenuous.

Worked example, two adults. Cable car up and down: 4 x $11.36 = $45.44, or 2 x $22.71 = $45.42 with return tickets, so the return saves nothing. A KTEL bus from Fira to Oia at $2.50 each way costs 4 x $2.50 = $10.00. Add the peak cruise fee of 2 x $22.71 = $45.42 and the independent day totals about $100.86 before food. Walking down and taking the cable car up only drops the lift cost to $22.72.

The cruise fee is the newer cost. Greek ports now charge a fee per passenger who goes ashore, at EUR 20, $22.71, for Santorini and Mykonos between June and September. It falls to EUR 12, $13.63, in April, May and October, and EUR 4 in winter. It is charged per call, and passengers who stay on board are described as refunded. The island also limits cruise visitors to 8,000 a day under a 2026 cap. Lines usually add the fee to your bill.

Excursions run from $80 for a volcano and hot springs trip to $329 for an afternoon food and wine tasting. A $139 Oia and winery tour lasts 4.5 hours, excludes tender time, and needs the cable car to get back to the tender pier. Most moderate tours cost $119 to $203. Euro amounts are converted once at the ECB reference rate of 2026-09-30 (EUR/USD 1.1355) and rounded, so treat them as static estimates. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates.

Compare the tender landing with the berth at Mykonos, where a 12-minute boat links the new port and old town, then budget in the cruise excursion budget calculator.
