Naples ships berth close to the old town, and Pompeii is a cheap train ride away, so the big costs are the site ticket and tours.

Where these numbers come from

Naples is one of the easier Mediterranean stops for a self-guided day. A guide to the port says ships use three piers, with Molo Beverello closest to the old town at a 5 to 10 minute walk. Immacolatella Vecchia sits farther east, at 15 to 20 minutes, where taxi service is described as less organized. Walking the center therefore costs nothing, and the real decision is whether to add Pompeii.

By train, Pompeii is cheap. The Circumvesuviana line is listed at about EUR 3.30, $3.75, for the 35 to 40 minute ride from Porta Nolana or Garibaldi to Pompei Scavi, which is about 2 minutes from the Porta Marina entrance. The site ticket is the larger cost. A guide lists the standard Pompeii Express pass at EUR 20, $22.71, with EUR 25 and EUR 30 options. Entry is one time only, so you cannot leave and come back.

Worked example, two adults by train. Train tickets both ways: 4 x $3.75 = $15.00. Pompeii entry: 2 x $22.71 = $45.42. Total $60.42 before lunch. The shuttle option lists at $29.99 per adult, or $59.98 for two, and the seller says the site fee of roughly EUR 15 is paid separately in cash. That older fee figure is lower than the current guide, so confirm the entry price when you book.

Private vehicles are costly by comparison. One firm quotes EUR 90 to the city center, $102, and EUR 99 to Pompeii, $112, one way. Sorrento is about EUR 130, $148, and Amalfi about EUR 180, $204. The same guide warns of taxi queues of 45 to 90 minutes in peak season when several ships arrive at once, which can eat a short port day. A 10-hour call suits Pompeii plus Sorrento better than the Amalfi coast, it says, because summer traffic is a risk.

Tours cover a wide range: a $59.99 half-day Pompeii sightseeing trip, an $82.99 Amalfi coast day, and a $207.99 Capri and Pompeii combination. Private full-day options run well above that, with several listed near $579. The pages opened did not list a cruise-specific tax in Naples. Euro amounts are converted once at the ECB reference rate of 2026-09-30 (EUR/USD 1.1355) and rounded, so treat them as static estimates. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates.

If the train plan appeals, compare it with the Rome day from Civitavecchia or the metro-based day from Piraeus. Put your numbers into the cruise excursion budget calculator.
