Where these numbers come from

Peanut butter looks solid in the jar, but TSA treats it as a spread. That puts it under the liquids, gels and pastes rule: in a carry-on, each container must hold 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less. The guidance for peanut butter gives no separate limit for checked bags.

Container size matters, not how much you actually take. A nearly empty 16 oz jar is still a 16 oz container, and officers judge by the labeled size. If you want spread for the flight, buy a 3.4 oz tub or single-serve packets.

Worked example: a trip with two kids calls for four 1.15 oz squeeze packets. Each packet is under the limit, and together they fit easily in a quart bag with other liquids. A full 12 oz jar goes in the suitcase instead, wrapped in a bag in case the lid cracks.

The simplest carry-on option is a sandwich. Once spread on bread, it is a solid food and is treated like any other sandwich. TSA notes that food may be taken out of your bag for separate screening because it can block X-rays. Keep it near the top.

If you are traveling with an allergy, remember that the rules are about screening only. Airline policies on peanuts differ and change, so check your airline before you fly. Crunchy and smooth versions follow the same limit, and so do almond and other nut butters.

Travel with kids or athletes usually calls for more than one serving, so count your containers. Each one needs to fit the quart bag, which holds roughly a quart of liquid in total, and overloaded bags can be refused at the checkpoint.

A few alternatives keep the flavor without the problem. Nut butter squeeze packs, powdered peanut butter and peanut butter crackers are solid or sealed single servings, and they skip the paste limit entirely. If you are bringing a gift jar home from a trip, the checked bag is the natural home, wrapped in a plastic bag and placed between soft clothes.

See the snacks page for other spreads, and run a question through the 3-1-1 liquids checker.
