Where these numbers come from

The renewal fee for an adult passport book is $130. A passport card alone costs $30, and a book plus card together costs $160. These are the amounts the State Department lists on 2026-09-30 for renewals by mail or online. You can renew this way if your last passport was issued within the past 15 years, when you were 16 or older, is undamaged beyond normal wear, and is in your current name or you have name change papers. If you do not qualify, you apply in person as a first-time applicant.

First-time and child applications add a $35 execution fee. That fee is paid separately to the place that accepts your application, such as a post office, and the application fee goes to the State Department. A first adult book is therefore $130 plus $35, or $165. A child under 16 pays $100 for the book, so $135 with the execution fee. A child card is $15 plus $35. Families add this up quickly: two parents renewing books and one child applying for a book costs 2 x $130 + $135, which is $395 before any extras.

Expediting and delivery. Expedited service adds $60 per application. The State Department lists 2-3 weeks for expedited review and 4-6 weeks for routine review, on a page it dated 2026-09-28. These times cover agency review only. Mailing your application and getting the passport back can add two to four weeks overall. Faster return delivery costs an extra $23.36 and moves the finished book through the mail in one to three days. Expedite plus delivery adds $83.36 to a renewal. A renewal with both therefore totals $130 + $60 + $23.36, or $213.36.

When paying extra makes sense. If your trip is more than three months away, routine service is the lowest cost. If you fly in two months, expedited service is the usual compromise. Anyone leaving within weeks should look at the State Department's rules on urgent travel appointments, which are separate from these fees. Plan for the passport to arrive well before departure, and check the validity your destination requires. Many countries ask for at least six months of validity. Cards cost less but only work for land and sea crossings with Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda, not for flights home from abroad.

Check before you pay. Fees and times change, and the State Department updates its pages without notice. Use only travel.state.gov to apply or pay. Private expediting companies charge their own fees on top of the government fee. Payment rules differ by route: in-person applications need a check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of State, while online renewals accept cards. Prices shown in US dollars.
